What should our generation be called

Over time, sociologists and generation researchers usually deem titles for the different age groups based on historical social trends. Below is a brief, non-comprehensive list of the Western cultural generations. Coined by author Gertrude Stein, this name refers to individuals who came of age during the First World War, observing an unimaginable loss of life as well as mass immigration. The term encompasses the general sense of purposelessness and aimlessness many youth experienced at the time.

These feelings were famously featured in works of expatriate American writers, such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose novels included themes of disillusionment and cynicism. The iPhone launched in , when the oldest Gen Zers were By the time they were in their teens, the primary means by which young Americans connected with the web was through mobile devices, WiFi and high-bandwidth cellular service.

Social media, constant connectivity and on-demand entertainment and communication are innovations Millennials adapted to as they came of age.

For those born after , these are largely assumed. Recent research has shown dramatic shifts in youth behaviors, attitudes and lifestyles — both positive and concerning — for those who came of age in this era. Beginning to track this new generation over time will be of significant importance. Pew Research Center is not the first to draw an analytical line between Millennials and the generation to follow them, and many have offered well-reasoned arguments for drawing that line a few years earlier or later than where we have.

Perhaps, as more data are collected over the years, a clear, singular delineation will emerge. We remain open to recalibrating if that occurs. But more than likely the historical, technological, behavioral and attitudinal data will show more of a continuum across generations than a threshold. As has been the case in the past, this means that the differences within generations can be just as great as the differences across generations, and the youngest and oldest within a commonly defined cohort may feel more in common with bordering generations than the one to which they are assigned.

This is a reminder that generations themselves are inherently diverse and complex groups, not simple caricatures. In the near term, you will see a number of reports and analyses from the Center that continue to build on our portfolio of generational research. Today, we issued a report looking — for the first time — at how members of Generation Z view some of the key social and political issues facing the nation today and how their views compare with those of older generations.

To be sure, the views of this generation are not fully formed and could change considerably as they age and as national and global events intervene. Even so, this early look provides some compelling clues about how Gen Z will help shape the future political landscape. However the older ones might be fighting our war in Afghanistan. The younger ones are hopefully still in school and planning on careers and jobs that will have strong demand and generate new opportunities.

According to Jean Twenge PhD. Jean Twenge's writings on generations differs from others. She uses historical surveys and 1 on 1 interviews, rather than just theorizing and speculating. She is a serious researcher, and a professor at San Diego University. Whereas Millenials were raised to think they were special and that they could become anything they dreamed of, and then after graduating they found that Boomers had let millions of jobs slip out of the country, iGen'ers have seen this, and are far more cautious and less optimistic and maybe less naive.

Our free personality test will help you understand what careers are a better match for you. It will also show you how to understand people better. If you are iGen and looking for a career, please pick a major in fields where there will be plenty of jobs and avoid fields where the jobs are limited. You have two choices - pick a trade or get the right college education.

Low skilled jobs will continue to disappear and you can not raise a family on the income from a low skilled job. You either need skills or education. If you want help choosing a new career, or making those big career decisions, check out my career counseling services.

Electrical Engineering and Software Engineering look really good. As does nursing, and being a family doctor. Civil Engineering offers very few jobs since we are not building a lot of bridges and buildings.

So avoid that. Jobs that must be done in person such as plumbers, electricians, barbers, beauticians, should still be in demand, although lower paying than jobs requiring a college education. The trades are more stable than many other careers. Sales jobs will continue to shrink.

Retails sales jobs are disappearing as shopping malls close and as Amazon takes over the world. Sales people are usually just middlemen. Who needs them? The Generation Alpha label, if it lasts, follows the roughly year cycle of generational delineations. How much do members of this new generation, or any generation, really have in common? A picture of Generation Alpha, if a blurry one, is starting to emerge. In various articles about its members, analysts have stated that they are or will grow up to be the best-educated generation ever, the most technologically immersed , the wealthiest , and the generation more likely than any in the past century to spend some or all of their childhood in living arrangements without both of their biological parents.

These are all notable features, but some of them are broad and fairly low-stakes observations, given that the global population has been getting richer , better educated , and more exposed to digital technology for a while now.

Some marketers and consultants who analyze generations have tried to get more specific. Many of these takeaways seem premature, or at least overeager.
