The EcoBoost engine takes advantage of this by analyzing what the Escape is doing and how much power it needs. In real life, it feels even more competent. At anything short of full throttle, the engine never gets much past 3, rpm, its abundant low-end torque letting the little bugger sail beneath all the thrashiness inherent to three-cylinder engines. Indeed, torque is so abundant that Ford, in normal stop-and-go driving, has the eight-speed automatic upshifting as low as 2, rpm and often riding along at 1, rpm in fourth or fifth gear — that kind of torquiness was once reserved for big V8s, not lowly 1.

Oh, the 2. The bad news in all this big-engine-performance is that the little turbo-three sucks back gas like, well, a bigger engine. Unfortunately, that appears to occur in all facets of their performance. The Escape, however, is a lot lighter on its feet. Score one for Ford, then. I can speak from experience because the Escape easily swallowed a huge six-foot boxing bag with the rear seats in flat-floor mode.

The load floor is also admirably low, a trait I much appreciated since the aforementioned punching bag weighed something close to kilograms. It looks and feels much better for it — if you opt for the SE trim, at least. But be forewarned: While they are closely related, these two engines perform quite a bit differently from one another. And though both models we tested came to us in Titanium grade, we found ourselves leaning toward certain add-ons, and recommend foregoing others to cut down on cost.

With additional packages giving drivers things like inch black alloys, mirrors, and roof rails, standard features sport LED lighting that add extra appeal to the slick CUV. Although both Escapes came to us as top-tier models, the results you get from going half a liter in one direction or the other is astounding.
