Contact The Team. How is it that sequoia trees can grow for so long? They are able to protect themselves against naturals threats. The tannic acid found in their sap helps the trees fight off fungal rot, protects them from parasites and acts as a fire repellent against low-intensity burns.
The only way these amazing trees reproduce is through seeds. These seeds remain in their pine cones for almost twenty years without seeing any sunlight. Believe it or not, the heat which results from naturally occurring forest fires helps to release these seeds them from the pine cones into the soil.
Another interesting fact is that these trees are the third longest-lived tree species and typically have a lifespan of 3, years.
The largest of these trees are equivalent in height to a story building. Sequoia National Park was the first park actually created to protect a living organism. Many of them have seen a hundred human generations rise, give off their little clamors and perish.
They seem indeed to be forms of immortality standing here among the transitory shapes of time. How is this possible you might ask? At Sequoia, the winters are relatively mild which makes it a perfect natural habitat for these incredible specimens to grow and thrive.
Sequoia also has the tallest mountain in the lower contiguous 48 states. Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. It has an elevation of 14, feet. The southern terminus of the John Muir Trail is where the summit is located. The fundamental idea behind the parks…is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us.
From the peak of Mount Whitney, you can see the incredible majesty of the Sierra Nevada range and look down into the beautiful Owens Valley.
This magnificent mountain is the highest point of the Great Basin Divide. As President, George W. How did he do it? According the the White House, he worked on an elliptical machine two days a week, lifted weights two days a week, ran an average of four miles four days each week and did regular stretching exercises. The trail is wide with a few staircases. Benches and informative panels can be found throughout General Sherman Trail. Did you know the Sherman Tree has a volume of 52, cubic feet? The footprint, like the tree has a circumference of feet and offers a distinct visual of the enormity of Sherman.
It will be even bigger next year. The General Sherman is still growing, adding about 0. According to the park brochure, this is enough to equal the mass of a typical sixty foot tree. For an easy opportunity to see more giant sequoias, continue on the Congress Loop , which starts at the Sherman Tree. Dogs and bikes are not permitted on trails in Sequoia National Park. One mile past the handicapped parking area across from the General Sherman Tree, turn right east on Wolverton Road.

Unless a major winter storm temporarily closes the road at that time, you should have no problem visiting the General Sherman Tree. We are planning to go to Sequioa National Park this 3rd week of April. Is it possible to see General Sherman Tree during this period?
Do we need to hike to be able to see it or we can just drive along? I will be visiting Sequoia National Park in September First of course I will go to see the General Sherman, but I was wondering if there are many trails and trees to visit by feet from that point? There are lots of nearby trails. Big Trees Trail is quite nice and you can walk from the General Sherman Tree all the way to Crescent Meadow through a lot of other trails.
Give this park as much time as you can! We want to see the General Sherman Tree.
