He or she did this to let the body form a well-shaped belly button on its own. The remaining peice of umbilical cord is called a stump. A few days to weeks after your birth, when your body had formed a properly closed bell button, the stump fell off naturally like a scab falling off of a healed wound assuming you did not have abnormalities at birth.
After your newborn's umbilical cord is cut, all that remains is a small stump. In most cases, the remaining cord will dry up and fall off one to three weeks after birth.
Until then, you want to keep the area as clean and dry as possible. It's a good idea to give sponge baths rather than full baths until the cord falls off and the navel area heals Exposing the cord to air and allowing it to dry at its base will hasten its separation. For others, it never closes, instead, the hole simply gets smaller but remains visible. If you have had it for longer than that, it will obviously take longer to close up, if it ever does.
Once piercings have completely healed and you take the earring, barbell etc out, there will always be some kind of mark, whether it be an actual hole or scar tissue.
Scars from belly piercings can definitely be a disappointment, but they don't have to be permanent. For mild scars, massage lotions and essential oils into the scar twice a day until it disappears.
I like piercings in general, but navel piercings are a turn off for me. Navel piercings can turn a girl from wholesome looking and hot to trashy in one instance of a bare mid drift. Any piercing can close up. It's a wound and skin naturally tries to heal. If you keep it in without ever taking it out for like years and then take it out for a day or something, you'll be fine. But if you leave it out for too long the time for healing varies widely between people , it could close up.
Right after birth, an umbilical cord stump usually looks white and shiny and may feel slightly damp. As the stump dries and heals, it may look brown, grey, or even black. This is normal. Usually no problems will develop as long as you keep the area clean and dry. The umbilical cord stump usually falls off in 1 or 2 weeks.
Sometimes the stump falls off before the first week. Other times, the stump may stay longer. You may notice a red, raw-looking spot right after the stump falls off. A small amount of fluid sometimes tinged with blood may ooze out of the navel area. It is normal for this to last up to 2 weeks after the stump falls off. If it doesn't heal or dry completely within 2 weeks, call your doctor or nurse call line. When to call a doctor Call your baby's doctor if you see any signs of an infection.
These signs include: Pus yellowish fluid that is around the base of the cord and smells bad. Red, tender skin around the base of the cord.
Your baby crying when you touch the cord or the skin around it. Also call your baby's doctor if you notice any other problems with the umbilical cord area, such as: A moist, red lump on your baby's navel that lasts for more than 2 weeks after the umbilical cord has fallen off. This may be a piece of extra tissue called an umbilical granuloma.
Your baby's doctor can treat this minor problem. Bulging tissue around the navel, usually noticed after the umbilical cord falls off.
